Source: SAR drawings No 7337 dated 11-9-1923 & No 7406 dated 27-10-1923 sh151.jpg Gibbons patent spring-frame bogies. In this design the axleboxes are held apart by a leaf spring top and bottom. All the usual expensive machined parts like horn brackets and links are therefore abolished, and the bogie reduced to a mere frame that the springs are attached to. No cheaper bogie could possibly be imagined. > sh152.jpg < It does suffer from the defect that a broken spring causes the whole structure to fall apart, though some stops on the frame were designed to catch the axleboxes and prevent a derailment if this happened, and for this reason it failed to find favour on any main line.
