Corkickle Brake Incline, Settle & Carlisle & Steam

1st September 1984 to 15th September 1984

The lure of steam from Fort William to Mallaig along with the Settle & Carlisle (under the threat of closure in 1984) took me north from Sussex on my Honda 185cc, up through Wales, into the Pennines and on to Scotland. A chance conversation with a man of the cloth (also camping - also a railway enthusiast) whilst camping under Ribblehead Viaduct, led me to explore the Corkickle Brake Incline at Whitehaven. I'd not heard of it before.
I stayed with friends in Wales, camped 'wild' (ie.not on a campsite) in some places and in Youth Hostels at other times. Thanks to the generosity of the workers at the CBI I camped right beside the incline in the garden of Dorothy Morgan.
