Dungeness & Romney Marsh

We took our cycles on the train to Appledore, Kent on Saturday afternoon (4th August 2007) and cycled for three and a half hours through small quiet lanes to Lydd, Dungeness and onto our booked accommodation at Lydd-on-Sea. Fish'n'chips on Dungeness beach Saturday evening at The Britannia pub as the sun went down.
Sunday 5th August: A more thorough exploration of Dungeness including the old lighthouse. Once home to the old fishing families the Earles & Tartes, Dungeness is a pleasantly peculiar mix of RSPB bird sanctuary/reserve, RHDR miniature railway to Hythe, salt & shingle based flora & fauna, older fishing quarters and signs of that bygone industry all overlooked by the nuclear power station. After lunch we put our cycles on the 15" gauge Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch train to St Mary's Bay (a 50 minute ride) and from there we cycled north through the lovely lanes for another three and a half hours back to Appledore and our (very packed) train home.

 Born in 1942, Derek Jarman studied painting at the Slade School in London. Other interests led him to the Royal Ballet and then to the Coliseum. The avant garde artist found inspiration at Dungeness, where he created a shingle garden from debris he found on the beach. He died of complications from AIDS on February 19, 1994.
